A beautiful black Friesian horse with a long wavy mane.
The Friesian (also called Frizian) is a beautiful light draft horse breed that originated Friesland, a northern province of the Netherlands. The Friesian is almost always black in color. Very rarely is one born of another color, the most famous of which was Fire Magic, a chestnut stallion. If you see a Friesian of a color other than black it is most likely a cross between a Friesian and another breed, such as a Thoroughbred. These are usually referred to as a Friesian Sporthorse, used for, as the name implies, equestrian sporting events. During the Middle Ages the ancestors of the modern Friesian were often used as war horses, large and strong enough to carry a knight in heavy armour, yet light and agile enough to maneuver in battle. Today the Friesian is a favorite as a carriage horse and in dressage for its beautiful high-stepping gait. If you've never seen a Friesian in action you should check out some YouTube videos!
