A dark bay Trakehner horse at dressage practice.
A Trakehner is a "warmblood" horse breed. Warmblood breeds are popular horses for dressage style riding. A warmblood is not a breed in itself but a group of horse breeds that were developed by crossing "coldblood" breeds with "hotblood" breeds. Coldbood breeds include draft horses such as Clydesdales and Percherons. Hotblood breeds include the Arabian and Thoroughbred. They get their designation based on temperament, with hotbloods being more energetic and excitable horses and coldbloods being more docile. Warmbloods, as you might guess, have temperments in between which makes them more desirable for the disciplined art of dressage. Besides the Trakehner, some of the popular warmblood breeds used in dressage are the Hanovarian, Oldenburg, and Danish Warmblood.
